National Highways notification: An update on the A40 Overbridge Refurbishment project
National Highways notification: An update on the A40 Overbridge Refurbishment project and advise of a change to the planned traffic management switch date.
Following further inspections and detailed assessments of the bridge deck, the contractor has identified additional work required to complete the current phase safely and to the required quality standard. This includes a greater extent of concrete repairs than originally anticipated including additional deck end repairs, and revised durations for waterproofing and bond coat application activities.
While a degree of risk and contingency was allowed for within the programme, the full extent of the repairs could only be determined once the existing waterproofing had been removed and the concrete deck exposed for detailed inspection.
As a result, the planned overnight closure of the A40 to facilitate the contraflow switch, moving all traffic onto the eastbound carriageway, has been rescheduled from 8 October 2026 to 19 October 2026.
To enable the switch, the A40 will be closed overnight in both directions between Over Roundabout and Highnam Roundabout on Monday 19 October, from 8pm to 6am. Following the closure, all traffic will be transferred onto the newly refurbished eastbound carriageway under contraflow traffic management while works progress on the westbound carriageway.
Whilst the switch date has changed, the overall project completion date remains unchanged at this stage.
The revised switch date has also been selected to avoid conflicting with planned M5 footbridge demolition works and the associated diversion routes through Gloucester.
National Highways appreciate that this change may be disappointing and wish to thank everyone for their continued patience while these essential improvements are delivered. They will continue to provide updates as the scheme progresses
